Several years ago, I went in for a colonoscopy. I am sharing intimate details so that if any of you have to go in for this procedure, you can put fears at ease by seeing my process.
The day before the procedure was a fasting day. I was allowed chicken broth or Ensure (an adult, water based fiber drink) I was hungry at times, but was able to manage it. I drank a 32 oz. Power Zero with 8 oz. of Miralax in the afternoon. Later in the evening, I was told to drink this bottle of orange colored drink that would show the results more easily to the doctor. It was very sweet, but I’ve drank far worse than that.
The day of the procedure, I had to get up at 4 a.m. (around the time I get up anyway so that wasn’t unbearable to me) to drink a 32 oz. Power Zero sports drink with 8 oz. of Miralax mix in.
We went into the outpatient facility at 8 am to check in (my friend drove me because you are not allowed to drive that day). The nurses were really great, and comforting. I spoke briefly with the doctor and then they sedated me…and off I went.
I have no memory of any part of it, but the results were good. I do not have cancer or any polyps. I met with the doctor for a summary of the test so that we could devise a plan to keep me healthy and regular long term.
Part of my plan is to continue my clean eating diet which is filled with fiber, whole complex grains, vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy , and lots of water.
The colonoscopy was not a big deal. If you have to have a colonoscopy, I can say, it’s okay. Having information is vital to keeping you healthy, especially if you have colon-cancer issues within your family. Information is power!
