8/30/09 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Sunday

How do you make good choices for your children?  My husband and I had over his half-sisters (5 and 7 years old) for dinner and a sleep over.  We both say adamantly how we want our children raised on healthy foods with little sugar.  Apparently that is not as easy as we thought it would be.  Haha we tried to feed the girls "healthy food" for dinner.  First, I tried to trick one of the girls into eating a "cheeseburger."  HILARIOUS.  Really all we had were mushroom veggie burgers.  So I cooked the burger and put cheese on top of it.  I thought for sure once I doused it with ketchup she wouldn't know the difference.  Boy, was I wrong!  The rice alone inside it grossed her out and from that point on all she would eat was the cheese and bread!  Hey, it was worth a try, her mom is a vegetarian.  I thought maybe she would like it.

Breakfast was a disaster as well.  The girls had requested pancakes so I made sure we had them before they went to school this morning.  I didn't even consider that our syrup would not be "kid friendly."  Apparently children do not like sugar-free syrup!  Wink  I'm hoping if I start my kids off with these kinds of foods they won't be so turned off by them...but hey, what am I thinking...aren't all kids picky eaters?
